Small Expat Business Websites - Why Hire A Website Designer

Small Expat Business Websites. Why Hire A Website Designer?

A lot of expat businesses in Europe - especially from What I have seen in Southwest France, around the Limousin, Poitou-Charentes and Aquitaine exist so the owner can make a living and "Get by" as opposed to being aggressively commercial ventures. (Most expats hope to have left such things behind!) Online business owners start with little money to throw around. They have to do everything themselves - create their own proposition, develop a marketing strategy, perhaps build their own website to showcase their product. As their business expands over time, they will find that their simple "homemade" site might not be marketing them in its own right, nor portraying their proposition as professionally as they would like and they will be taking a day or two simply to dedicate to website development.

Sounds familiar? Chances are, you're someone who started everything with no money too, so you're pretty sceptical when it comes to giving away your money in exchange for something that you could - in essence - have done yourself. But - if done right - there is a lot more a professional designer can give you than just finishing up a job that you don't want to do.

When you hire a web designer to do "part of your old job" for you, you are doing more than just handing over a "time expense" or "distraction" to them (and they had better be taking ON more than just that to be honest). By contracting-out your web design, you are parting with money, but you are saving your own time that should otherwise be dedicated to your business and sales. Again, if you are doing this as a next step in your business, then you are growing and changing too.

Let the designer worry about minutiae of maintaining your (especially if it is an enhancement project and the site is getting a bit more complex). That way, you will be more focused and have more time to spend on your actual business.

The web site designers you hire ought to be professionals and therefore good at what they do. But make sure they are actually expanding your site and its searchability. If your business is growing, merely taking your old "Online Brochure" site and pretty-ing it up is not what you want.

By outsourcing your web page design jobs to a competent designer / marketer, you should be starting a dialogue and a relationship with them and not just contemplating a single transaction. (Again, especially if the site is to reflect a thriving business. The site itself simply can't stand still).

Also, the work you pay for will turn out more professional than you can achieve yourself. Again, if your site is growing and more than just a static brochure, the visual element becomes much more important. Adding Flash and Java can really give you a visual edge and these are outside the capabilities of a basic web builder (certainly if they have a business to run!)

Professional Web designers are great for helping you take the next step with your online business. Remember if this is the case that you are growing too and some aspects of what you "did" have to be sent to someone else. But make sure that someone else delivers for you! Need advice? Website designers need tools of this quality. They are more pricey than some utilities, but you get what you pay for. "Free" or "unknown" brands imply risk and low quality.
